Crusty, Old, Smelly Dreadlock Girl

For over 8 years I've been denying my "inner hippie" urge of the luring temptation of dreadlocks. I think they are cool, pretty, rad, fun, intriguing...

Did I want dreadies because then I finally have an excuse to not brush my hair? Or did I want them because it was a way I could creatively express myself? Am I too old? What would people think? If I got them would I be a poser wannabe?

Newsflash: I'm not a hippie. The closest thing to hippie is my husband who went homeless a few years ago for a social experiment, and he was actually more vagabond than hippie. I don't smoke the doobie. I just googled doobie to figure out how to spell it properly. The only way I know about the Rastafarian Culture is from an episode of WifeSwap. I prefer to shower, wash my hair and smell pretty. [Stereotype]

I was recently challenged to look at any stereotypes or preconceived notions I was holding onto. So as trivial as it was, I began researching the history behind dreadlocks and the maintenance of the hairstyle. Although the act of getting dreadlocks for me isn't culturally relevant, it's an expression of not wanting to mold into societal norms. I think when we do that we limit God's ability to work in our life.

Romans 12:2 "Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking" 

I'm half way done to a full head of dread. If you spare me the "They are dreadfull!" comments in reference to my hair, then I'll spare you a *smelly dreadhead. I may be old for dreadies but I can promise you that I won't be the crusty, smelly dreadlock girl. As insignificant as changing my hairstyle is...this is an expression of me taking a risk, stepping out of my comfort zone and FINALLY pursuing something I've thought about for 8 years.

The reason I share this little dread-end story with you, is because I started wondering...

* If you do not wash your hair it will stink. Dreadlocked hair needs to be washed regularly just like un-dreaded hair. You can wash dreads just as you would wash a sponge, by working the soap in and then squeezing and rinsing repeatedly to get all the soap out. Clean hair will actually lock up faster than dirty or oily hair.

Q&A: Editing with Avid

Thanks for the question! I love a good tech chat. If you are looking to convert all your current FCP projects to Avid (which can get a little costly) I highly recommend Automatic Duck. It's the only program I know of that converts FCP Sequences and effects to Avid or other platforms. It offers timeline translation capabilities between Avid, Adobe After Effects, Combustion, Discreet Smoke, Final Cut Pro, Motion and Quantel via XML, OMF and AAF.

Why Purchase an Avid
I love, love, love Avid!! I think it's a lot more reliable then Final Cut Pro. You can also map out your keyboard with unique user settings. Say you are working on another computer, you can load in your settings and start editing. I think Avid helps make faster editors.

If you are looking for an Avid seller I bought my avid through videoguys and here's a coupon I got in my email the other day. If you purchase Media Composer 4, you'll get an automatic free upgrade to MC5 which releases in June (which I hear will be amazing).

The church I freelance for still uses Final Cut Pro...it's a great platform for layering multiple graphics but from a professional, broadcast stand point, Avid is the way to go. Hope this helps!

Climb The Power Lines

I asked my husband "What inspires you?"
His immediate response "Adventure."
This response was from a man who just spent the past 10 days on a surf trip in Costa Rica. Before leaving, he spent 4 months figuring out their travel route in pursuit of the best waves and left the country without booking a hotel room.

So today's Inspirational Monday highlights some photos from their trip to Costa Rica...where iguanas rained from the trees and monkeys climbed power lines. My husband and his friend battled down-for-the-count food poisoning and still managed to triumphantly ride waves the size of a house.

My husband the engineer, left Costa Rica inspired with out of the box inventions and began thinking up new ways to challenge social norms again.

"Don't Like Church" Video Contest

Personally, I think this is a great idea at the root level (creating a contest asking participants to create a viral video to promote some buzz for their church). Stylistically the web, graphics and sample videos bring some cohesiveness to the contest....but then I die a little inside. This is a heart breaking concept and is horribly executed. I feel it's promoting mockery of the church, rather than unification. This contest as a whole makes my stomach hurt and I feel like I've just been cheated on. Do I feel this way because I am a Christian? If I wasn't a Christian what would I think? Christian or not, this marketing campaign gets two lame-o thumb downs from me.

Are you all about it and started storyboarding your video to win the cash prize? Is this church trying too hard to be different and cool? Wish you thought of it to promote your church?

He Was...I Am

Today I wanted to highlight an Easter Video. I came across this "He Was...I Am" video...and continued my google search. After a few more hours of googling, and drooling over a few other pieces...my mind kept going back to the first video I watched.

It's drastically different from the simplistic piece featured last week. I choose to feature it in today's post because it inspires me creatively, pulled on my heartstrings and stirs my soul...Enjoy!

5 (possibly obvious) REASONS WHY THIS VIDEO WORKS

The Actor Is Good!
This guy connects with the material. I'm not sure if he's a pastor, paid actor or random lurker off the street, but he sure knows how to communicate in a dynamic way. When creating original content, sometimes we over look who will be on camera and have this "we'll take who we get" attitude. With the right person in front of the lens, it can really take your production to a whole other level. Let's go crazy...and maybe even hold auditions for the talent in our next videos.

Uses Existing Footage
Did you notice the footage from The Passion of the Christ? The editor made it look like new material by layering it with effects and using quick cuts. Using existing stock footage or pulling from feature films can save you time and money...and sometimes it ends up being better quality too. It's not that easy to recreate Jesus on the cross without being cheesy or spending a bunch of money. So why not borrow from a source that already mastered what you are trying to emulate?

Overly Edited & Produced
Sometimes over producing and editing a piece works. In this video I think laying on effects, sound effects, filters and cutting fast made me really focus on the what they are trying to communicate. Ironically, the craziness of the edit helped me focus on what the actor was truly saying. Plus, major bonus points for making a funky, stylized, beautiful video!

The Message Rocks My Face Off
Because God did this...I am this. I loved the juxtaposition of the message and have watched it about 10 times now, and every time it rocks my face off. This script is solid and a great concept. Secretly jealous I didn't come up with it....What's your flava fav. line? Mine is..."He was a radical." I have a new fav. line every time I watch it though.

Original Music Cue?
This music cue is just toooooo good. I think it has to be an original music cue. What do you think? The music transitions perfectly between sections and hits right at the end...it seems too good to be true. It just reminds me how important music is and sometimes I just frantically find whatever I can get my paws on...so this is a good reminder that a solid cue can change a piece from average to above average.

This is a big difference from last weeks video. What do you think?! Favorite line? Love it or hate it? I want to know!

I Am Second

Stories are powerful! Which is way I LOVE the I am Second campaign. I come from the world of featurettes (mini-documentaries that go on DVDs) and would cut an edit with an exorbitant amount of footage and photos....or else it would be considered lame and boring.So when I came across the I Am Second campaign a few years ago and saw that it told a story pulling footage from only one source, and it did it successfully...my view started to change.
This actor's widsom is far beyond her years...and her words are powerful. Here's a look at a story from the I Am Second crew.

What Inspired Me From This Campaign

1. Words are powerful. God does some pretty amazing stuff daily. With the right story and a willing heart to tell it, you can create a masterpiece!

2. You don't need a million dollar set to hold an interview in. Sometimes simplicity is best so it doesn't take away from the content.

3. In watching some of their other pieces I saw a theme in the edits. To help convey emotion in their stories the editor uses sound effects, cue changes and edits to create tension...or joy...to create an emotion. If you are a master of that, then you can create a compelling and rich story by only utilizing interview footage.

4. If you have a concept that works, stick with it! In every story the person speaking is wearing black. The backdrop is black. The couch is white. It's edit style stays the same. I think the consistency in their campaign brings a simplistic look at a powerful story.

Every child loves a great Easter egg hunt, and you can advertise it for free as an event on craigslist, in the paper or hand out flyers. This is a great way to get new families with little kids to attend a service...
Like I always say "You can always lure people into liking you with candy."

Church Shopping

A few months ago my husband and I transitioned out of the Summit Church. The Summit is very near and dear to my heart, and will always be. I was humbled to be apart of the launch team a little over three years ago which led me into meeting a hot surfer a month after we started holding services. I eventually discovered the hot surfer was a comedian with a brain of an engineer and the creativity of a liger. We later got married. I digress...

Leaving the Summit was hard but we felt a new adventure stirring so we began church shopping. I googled my way through all the churches in the OC and we ended up visiting 3 very different churches.

1. We attended a motorcycle loving church. We "worshiped" to some Green Day songs and I cried in my seat wondering what mess I got us into. Later we went to the "Welcome Booth" and got asked what our drug of choice was, because they have a group for that.
2. We also spent a few weeks at a charasmatic, 80s graphics, hard to join a small group church. I was in love...but felt unsettled. Meanwhile, God was behind the scenes orchestrating together a masterpiece.
3. The next church we attended we felt a lure to come back. The next week we attended a bible class for married folk and joined a married couples small group. While stalking the churches website I saw that they were looking to contract out a video editor. I got the gig...and am loving it! The church is extremely hands on in the community and God has used it to confirm a new passion in my husband and I (more details later...for now let your imagination go wild). I can see my God given dreams and goals slowly coming to fruition.

The moral of the story is...if God is asking you to do something - DO IT! Sometimes the transition may seem hard and you can't always see how it will turn out, but trust that God is TRULY in control! With obedience comes a deeper understanding of love and purpose.

Going through my partial media fast (read prevy blog post) I've encountered a few growing pains I want to highlight in an utterly generic way.

1. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
ex: I'm sorry oldie in the blue car, I road raged your face off (okay, maybe a few times) I'm sorry for my poor 'tude. I'm changing my ways and trying to be positive. Next time I'll slow down with you and notice the beautiful scenery.

2. Not making a move, is your move.
ex: 6 months ago
"Jenny, we should __insert fictitious scenario___"
My reply:
My nothing response for 6 months has taken a lot of energy and has resulted in negativity. Living in denial is not always the best answer.

3. Even if my dream has faded or been given up on, doesn't mean my Creator has.
ex: He's the dream Creator...He's been stirring something up. If only I can not respond in point 2 fashion, perhaps we will move along quite nicely.

4. We are blessed ( I know,I know, EXTREME "church" word...but true)
ex: Semi-simplifying my routine, and hanging with my #1 (aka God) has left me feeling satisfied.

When is the last time you got truly inspired by your Creator?

I'm a google maniac and love to read blogs, stalk people's face(book), get creative ideas from out of the box ministries, and catch up on the trendy twitter topics.

Late at night when the comps are turned off, Jon & Kate gossip is put to rest and I lay my head on my pillow, the world seems still...minus an occasional 'quake or drunken banter outside my window. I don't want my inspirational moments to only occur as I drift off to dream land.

My love for technology is limiting my creativity. I am getting distracted and not spending QT time getting refreshed by my #1 stunner.

My goal for the month of June is to fast my tech. habits/obsessions during the day and replace them with quiet moments. In those moment's I desire to be still and hear God. I'll turn off the computers, iphones, work, TV and sit at the beach and get inspired by my Creator.

My goal is to cut my media time in half...and journal (old school paper & pen) along the way. Do you want to do the media fast?

Current Project: Game Play Trailer

I was able to work with some cool dudes over at Atlus Online and we created a Game Play Trailer for Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent!

I editing this piece on the Avid and it took about a week with changes and approvals. After the project finished, I was itching to have the game launched so I could play.

My fav. part is the characters changing outfits...ummm yes, that was totally girly.

Making a Church Video

These are my top tip & tricks for making videos...Some are basic, but key to making a successful video!

Pre-Prod Tips & Tricks

Don’t be too distracted by technology to be able to create innovative church services (ex: twitter all day, facebook all night....When are you spending quality time with God to get inspired?)
Meet with key leaders 6 weeks prior to important services for massive brainstorming sessions
Plan ahead with script, storyboard and/or treatments
Know the culture of your church (what may be funny to you isn't always funny to the congregation)

Production Tips & Tricks

Roll your tape for 30 seconds at the beginning (creates an easy capture in the editing)
Check audio feed with headphones
White balance
Turn off camera in between shots (save money on tapes and less to capture)
Use a tripod (unless you are shooting a remake to the Blair Witch)
Watch the head room
Give the subject lead space
Use the rule of thirds

Post Production Tips & Tricks

The final video should be under 5 minutes (Our mind begins to wonder after 20-30 seconds)
Spice it up with stock images & graphics
While editing, remember less is more (that means no cheesy effects)

Have a lower budget and looking for an easy breezy way to display videos and on screen visuals during your church events? I've created a quick set up guide for you with some tips...

Tips & Tricks

* Purchase a 16x9 projector & screen.

This way when you are ready to make the switch to high definition, you won't have to purchase a new screen because it already works with the proper aspect ratio. Plus, your eye views a widescreen aspect ratio....and in non technical terms, it's just cooler.
Widescreen 16x9 have an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (width:height)
Square TV 4x3 have an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (width:height)
The eyes have an aspect ratio of 1.75:1 (width:height)...it's closest to viewing widescreen as opposed to full frame 4x3.

* Evaluate ambient light to determine lumen amount.

One of the mistakes we made when we purchased our video gear for our start up church, was that we didn't realize how much light would be coming through the huge side windows. We have some problems displaying videos and graphic content occasionally. "Lumens are extremely important when choosing a projector because you will want a bright, sharp image to be displayed. The brighter the image, usually the sharper the contrast will be.

Projectors with Lumens Ratings from 2,000 to 3,500

These projectors are generally moderate to high priced. They deliver extremely bright images and do not require lighting to be lowered, however lowered lighting, especially in bright lighting situations can be helpful." (http://www.tech-faq.com/projector-lumens.shtml)

* The larger the laptop display size = better the IMAG quality

More pixels will be displayed through the projector. This means, better quality.

Current DVD Project: I Love You, Man

I've been working on an offline edit for the DVD featurette for I Love You, Man. I've been editing on an Avid Media Composer with boris continuum effects.

The movie came out on March 20, starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel and directed by John Hamburg. Paramount's film placed second in the box office with $18 million.

Editing Gaming Trailer

Recently I spent a few days editing a gaming trailer for some cool guys at Atlus. I edited the piece on Avid Media Composer 3.0 in full frame 4x3 Standard Definition with the 2:1 compression. I used some boris continuum effects to add a little flair. Once the piece was approved I used sorensen squeeze to compress it in a web friend format.

5 Year Plan

In college I lived in Los Angeles for 3 months, amongst friends and little kid stars. I spent my days interning and going to classes. I was miserable and vowed to never come back. I wanted nothing to do with this crowd, town or industry.

I bet God laughed at that one.

Cut to: Video equipment and clothes obstructing my view as I wave goodbye to my parents...not sure when I would return to Upstate NY.
It's almost my 5 year anniversary of driving cross country with friends (for the second time) to start my career working in an industry of dreamers. I left uncertain...taking the only step I knew to take and here I sit, almost 5 years later, more certain then I've ever been (disregard my last blog post).

Our first stop in Hollywood, was at a gas station. It was almost as magical as Disneyland. It's a beautifully bold statement...but hear me out.

And gas station scene:
Young Crusty Dude "Hey girl, I'm a feature music composer. What do you do?"
I looked around unsure if YCD was talking to me. Confidently I replied, "I'm a video editor." We switched business cards and I realized a. I was about to get murdered or b. this town is magical

I doubt he was a music composer. After all, my jump cut editing skills where sparse. The beautifully magic part about this town is that people go to H(w)ood because they believe in themselves. They believe they have the skills to make it. They will wait tables and stand in hours and hours of auditions, classes, or coffee getting overtime to work their way into success.

So here I am, 5 years later, on the outskirts of Hollywood and I can truly say (without lying this time) "I'm an editor".

I had a 5 year plan: Move to CA, Be an editor, Get Married, Live By the Beach, Tell My Story (through a form of media), Get a Bunny, Don't Get a Bunny...crap, I gave up lists in my last blog post.

The moral of this story is...sometimes you hate (mama said it's a strong word)...dislike something, but you can sense that you need to pursue it. Go after it! I bet God is laughing because He has something beautifully magical up His sleeve...and 5 years later you'll look back and realize through that one step of boldness you became a dreamer and you let Him be a dream fulfill-er.

Irony at its best

For the first time we ran a full page ad in the college newspaper for the Summit Church. It was my job to submit the full page graphic to the newspaper so they could do the layout. Today I saw the paper and the irony. The huge words "CHURCH ON CAMPUS" was directly next to a page with the bold word...

"vagina"...It was an article discussing the The Vagina Monologues- which actually benefits non profits with $$$ and creating awareness for women's anti-violence groups...but still?!?! Some pretty ironic placement by the person who designed the layout...or some effective advertising...you tell me?!

Creativity in a small church...

It's 2:24am. I have spent the past 6 hours googling, thinking and praying...wishing and hoping...getting inspired by churches that are creative. The problem is, all these churches are huge. My church....we are 2 years old and have a head count of about 100. There is nothing wrong with that, I love my church and feel we have big things happening and even bigger things in the future. But we are limited. Limited in budget, resources, talents and time.

My passion is to be apart of something unique. To create a unique church experience that entertains while captivates an audience into understanding the heart of God. But the church is limited. I know I serve a limitless God. I better know that - considering we just made up that series in our church creative meeting today...God is limitless. But I feel like I'm at a standstill. What's the next move? My heart is about to jump out of my throat - I feel like I have ideas, gifts and thoughts that are just bursting to come out...but where, how, when...what step do I take?

I have to take some type of action...googling can only get me so far.

I guess the moral of the story is, we serve a limitless God. It's time I stop limiting my life and believing that there really are huge things in store - I need to figure out how God can get the small church to be creative...or something

Sorry for my lack of amazing posts. I basically moved to LA for a few months and worked on editing some featurettes for a good friend of mine. The project is done...Onlined, and delivered to the studio! And I am back, rested and ready for creating some media stuff, in time for the glorious Christmas season...

Hijacked

I can't remember the last time I didn't have to go to church a few hours before service. This past Sunday was a rarity. My almost two month husband and I were lazying around the house and the iphone buzzed. It was one of the video team members.

Video dude "Hey, what should I do because we don't have a countdown. Is it okay if we don't play it?"

Me "We should have the DVD. Check the player or the drawer."

Video dude "Our church trailer was stolen."

That was all he said. That ended our lazy Sunday as we rushed off to church to figure out WHAT was going on.

Our trailer was stolen....the trailer of a church that's mobile. Tech. equipment was MIA, kids church didn't have their fun goodies, missing Bibles, CD's of past messages...basically the church was stolen.

The congregation...We worshiped and praised. We listened to a powerful message. That's what church is about. Fellowship, Jesus, growing, praising...And I wondered, "Do we sometimes get too distracted by the high tech gear? Is a church more powerful if it's simplified?"

We are a media driven society and need to use the resources that can reach people. I get that, especially because I make media for a living! But maybe once in a while, its nice to simplify. Raw and uncut.

We are praying our equipment will be replaced, we are able to forgive, and able to serve our community with effective methods of communicating the gospel. I am also praying that the people who hijacked the trailer will come across the Bibles and messages of hope and hear about how God loves them...Perhaps they'll develop a relationship with God and feel called to start a church....good thing they already have all the equipment.

I have searched long and hard across the net for some kickin' backgrounds that didn't jump when they loop. I couldn't find any. So I decided to create my own. All the backgrounds loop seamlessly...and hopefully can add a little flava flav to your life.

Let me know your favs. so I can continue to make backgrounds up your ally. All of these have been purchased by churches around the nation...which is exciting/crazy! I even had a background that was the #2 best seller for a few weeks. Isn't that weird!? It's rad seeing God use the talents He hooked me up with outside of the tiny box I once placed myself in.

Bummed - But I had 12 more that I recently had to pull from the site because the website didn't compress the files properly and they were unusable. I will try to have those back up at some point soon.

I love grunge...so the majority of the 'grounds you'll see are grungin'. Enjoy.

The Teresa Project

I am extremely excited!! Heartwipe just got approval for a new video we're working on. We received talent approval and I can't wait to start producing it. Brief synopsis: Teresa was an amazing woman. She was a wife, mother, sister and child of God. She overcame many hardships throughout life - One of those battles was a 10 year fight with cancer. Her funeral was a very, VERY moving service and it ended with a video she made - She spoke elegant words of hope, faith and love - and she spoke those words in the middle of a battle with one month to live.

We gained permission to use her powerful words to share the gospel. Our hope is that Teresa's words will inspire and challenge the world to go deeper in understanding God's love and how God created us all with a purpose and destiny.

New Traditional Background

For those of you that aren't aware...I made a new background for sermonspice.com It's called "heavenly rays". The majority of my backgrounds have been grunge animations, but for this round I decided to reach the church that appreciates "landscape" type backgrounds (more traditional). This background is made for a seamless loop - with moving clouds and glistening rays in the foregrounds.

Random Disclaimer (may be confusing):
I decided to make all my backgrounds anamorphic. Which means 16x9. Here's a little lesson....When downloaded the aspect ratio remains the same 4x3 (normal tv). But because it's anamorphic if your church uses a 16x9 screen it's stretched to fit properly. It does not have black bars on the top or bottom (letterboxed). That's not considered 16x9 - thats a cheap trick people use...So in making my backgrounds anamorphic - it hits up the best of both worlds....Proper viewing for a 4x3 & 19x9 screen...if you are totally confused, just disregard this last part!!

HWood vs. the Church

I've been working in Hollywood editing "behind the scenes" content that goes on DVDs...You know, special features. The film (which will remain unnamed) is being released in theaters with a PG-13 rating...I have a feeling I'm working with the unrated version. It will be interesting to see how they managed to get the rating. All in all the movie was laugh out loud funny...but I don't really reccomend it due to its poor language (= a lot of f bombs). And since it remained a nameless disaster...then it really doesn't matter now does it.

Enough about Hollywood...now onto my real passion. "The church" (said in a Hillsong Australian accent). My goal in life (cue dramatic theme song) is to create media that shows God's love...and to train "the church" how to use media during services & events in innovative ways. So along with that goal comes alot of trial & error. So join in on this action as we take the journey of trial and error together...via the blog.

Missed Opportunities

There's so many times in life when I tally up a list of the "would/coulda's" and often find myself lying in bed at night thinking how I could have made better usage of my time…whether it was working on a project, organizing my room, hanging out with the ones I love, better yet..the ones I despise – eager to find a glimpse into their life of something, anything- that I can latch onto and love them for (was that rude?) It's like I have to have 3984 things going on at once and always be planning ahead 4 steps so I can make it in this crazy-burn you out on life, sorta world. It's like I often find myself running, flying through life and a day goes by, weeks, months, years and it's like I'm missing. The. Moments. The MOMENTS THAT MATTER. The sunsets. The painted orange, yellow sky that God created. The laughter with friends. The shared interests. The prayers. The deep convos. It's all been a blur, because I'm running to the next thing. Or thinking ahead of WHAT I should be doing or how I should be doing it at that moment. So I am sorry. I am sorry for all the missed opportunities I've had in life because I wasn't there. I mean, I was there…but I wasn't there. I've had friends…oh wait…even better… I've had God…challenge me on turning off everything. Technology. Computers. Phones. TV. Radio. My Brain. Sit.In….Silence. What do you hear?! Beauty…trust…hope….nothing. Wait, I actually hear the clock ticking. But I swear, my tv is off and so is my itunes. I hear cars outside. I find that comforting. In the silence I hear a comforting voice…. Don't miss out on me. (please note I do not actually hear voices…its that still quiet voice of revelation) Don't miss out on knowing me.

I guess I can choose to sit here and think about all the missed opportunities. But doing that would be wasting valuable time that I could spend learning about my Creator. Classic Psalm 46:10 - Be Still and Know that I am God. Well, augh, I'm choosing to not miss any more opportunities to study, read about, mediate on who God is – who He REALLY is. Silent reflection…
